It’s been 21 years since the Columbine shooting took place on April 20, 1999 and still every time there is a school shooting Columbine comes up; it is the “quintessential” school shooting after all. Even in the rare moment when there aren’t a lot of school shootings happening (perhaps the one bright side to Covid) true crime enthusiasts are still extremely interested some folks (commonly referred to as Columbiners) get a little too obsessed and even idolize the shooters. It’s these members of the “true crime community” or TCC as it were who are calling for the release of the basement tapes. They claim it is for research purposes but the pictures they post of these two mass murders with hearts around them and flower crowns on their heads determined that is a lie. Feeding this “community’s” need for new content are several YouTube personalities who claim to be researchers (but rereleasing old news/talk shows and reviewing Columbine movies/re-enactments does not a researcher make). Every now and then (usually when they feel their popularity slipping) these youtube personalities will tease the TCC about releasing the basement tapes (which are the videos containing the manifesto, instructions for making bombs, and call to other would be school shooters to follow in their footsteps that the Columbine perpetrators made prior to the shooting and left behind to get their message across). I think it would be common sense that releasing these tapes is a way bad idea as a lot of other school shooters have directly said they were inspired by Columbine, but most people still interested in the case seem to think that copy cats only exists because of the mystery created by the the sheriff’s decision not to release the tapes (officially and most likely actually they were destroyed in 2011). Despite the very real threat of copy cats and despite the wishes of some families of victims for the tapes to never see the light of day a majority seem to insist that there is something we can learn from the tapes that overrides the risk and wishes of victims families. I think it would be terrible idea with potential deadly consequences and I hope that all copies have incineratorated in the Denver airport as the official documentation shows.

My number 1 and 2 artists are bands I listened to for a couple of days back in July or something and totally forgot about for the months following up until today, meanwhile a band that I’ve listened to on repeat for the past 6 months didn’t even make it into my top 5. My 3 favorite songs by them that I’ve had on repeat for weeks are nowhere to be found. There’s two genres in my top 5 that I don’t even like. Sure, there’s probably a couple of songs that I’ve listened to that fall in that genre but enough to make it into my top 5? Seems unlikely.
In the first 20 songs of my top 100 playlist there’s 4 songs by one of the bands that I listened to for a couple of days and forgot about that I mentioned before, yet I can’t seem to find the songs of the band I’ve had on repeat at all. I can only find 2 songs of my #2 genre in my top 100 meanwhile there’s songs that I know for a fact only listened to in the gym once or twice within the first 20. Funny enough the songs that I supposedly listened to a lot are all by more popular artists meanwhile my actual favorite artists that aren’t as popular are nowhere to be found which makes me believe that spotify is pushing popular music over underground/less popular artists.
I know that spotify only counts it when you’re streaming online, but that’s not the issue. I literally have 0 songs downloaded because I have unlimited music streaming in my data plan so there’s no point in listening offline when listening online doesn’t cost me any data.
I know, first world problems, but it’s annoying haha

Bell's inequality is one of the significant milestones in the investigation of interpretations of quantum physics. Einstein didn't like many features of quantum physics, particularly the suggestion that there is no underlying physical value of an object before we measure it. Let's use Stern's Gerlach's experiment. The spin in x and z-axis are called non-commutative, and complementary. That is the spin of the silver atom cannot simultaneously have a fixed value for both x and z-axis. If you measure its value in the x-axis, it goes up, measure it in z, it forgot that it was supposed to go up in x, so if you measure in x again, you might get down. This should be clear from the previous exercise already and the rules which allow us to predict the quantum result.

There are other pairs of non-commutative observables, most famously position and momentum. If you measure the position of a particle very accurately, you hardly know anything about its momentum as the uncertainty in momentum grows large, and vice versa. This is unlike the classical assumption where one assumed that it's possible to measure position and momentum to unlimited accuracy simultaneously. We call the trade-off in uncertainty between these pairs as Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

Niels Bohr and his gang developed the Copenhagen principle to interpret the uncertainty principle as there's no simultaneous exact value of position and momentum possible at one time. These qualities are complementary.

In 1935, Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) challenged the orthodox Copenhagen interpretation. They reasoned that if it is possible to predict or measure the position and momentum of a particle at the same time, then the elements of reality exist before it was measured and they exist at the same time. Quantum physics being unable to provide the answer to their exact values at the same time is incomplete as a fundamental theory and something needs to be added (eg. hidden variables, pilot wave, many worlds?) to make the theory complete.

In effect, they do believe that reality should be counterfactual definite, that is we should have the ability to assume the existence of objects, and properties of objects, even when they have not been measured.

In the game analysis we had done, we had seen that if we relax this criterion, it's very easy to produce quantum results.

EPR proposed a thought experiment involving a pair of entangled particles. Say just two atoms bouncing off each other. One going left, we call it atom A, one going right, we call it atom B.

We measure the position of atom A, and momentum of atom B. By conservation of momentum or simple kinematics calculation, we can calculate the position of B, and momentum of A.

The need for such an elaborate two-particle system is because the uncertainty principle doesn't allow the simultaneous measuring of position and momentum of one particle at the same time to arbitrary precision. However, in this EPR proposal, we can measure the position of atom A to as much accuracy as we like, and momentum of B to as much accuracy as we like, so we circumvent the limits posed by the uncertainty principle.

EPR said that since we can know at the same time, the exact momentum of B (by measuring), and position of B (by calculation based on measurement of the position of A, clearly both momentum and position of atom B must exist and are elements of reality. Quantum physics being unable to tell us the results of momentum and position of B via the mathematical prediction calculation is therefore incomplete.

If the Copenhagen interpretation and uncertainty principle is right that both properties of position and momentum of a quantum system like an atom cannot exist to arbitrary precision, then something weird must happen. Somehow the measurement of the position of A at one side and momentum of B at the other side, makes the position of B to be uncertain due to the whole set up, regardless of how far atom A is from atom B. Einstein called it spooky action at a distance and his special relativity prohibits faster than light travel for information and mass, so he slams it down as unphysical, impossible, not worth considering. (A bit of spice adding to the story here.) Locality violation is not on the table to be considered.

Bohr didn't provide a good comeback to it. And for a long time, it was assumed that this discussion was metaphysics as seems hard to figure out the way to save uncertainty principle or locality. For indeed, say we do the experiment, we measured position of atom A first, we know the position of atom B to a very high accuracy. Quantum says the momentum of atom B is very uncertain, but we directly measured the momentum of atom B, there’s a definite value. Einstein says this value is definite, inherent property of atom B, not uncertain. Bohr would say that this is a mistaken way to interpret that exact value, momentum of atom B is uncertain, that value going more precise than the uncertainty principle allows is a meaningless, random value. Doing the experiment doesn’t seem to clarify who’s right and who’s wrong. So it’s regarded as metaphysics, not worth bothering with.

An analogy to spin, which you might be more familiar with now, is that two electrons are entangled with their spin would point the opposite of each other. If you measure electron A in the z-axis and get up, you know that electron B has spin down in z-axis for certain. Then the person at B measured the electron B in x-axis, she will certainly get either spin up or down in the x-axis. However, we know from previous exercise to discard the intuition of hidden variables that this means nothing. The electron B once having a value in z-axis has no definite value in x-axis, and this x-axis value is merely a reflection of a random measurement.

Then in 1964, came Bell's inequality which drags the EPR from metaphysics to become experimentally testable. This inequality was thought out and then experiments were tested. The violation of the inequality which is observed in experiments says something fundamental about our world. So even if there is another theory that replaces quantum later on, it also has to explain the violation of Bell's inequality. It's a fundamental aspect of our nature.

It is made to test one thing: quantum entanglement. In the quantum world, things do not have a definite value until it is measured (as per the conventional interpretation) when measured it has a certain probability to appear as different outcomes, and we only see one. Measuring the same thing again and again, we get the statistics to verify the case of its state. So it is intrinsically random, no hidden process to determine which values will appear for the same measurement. Einstein's view is that there is an intrinsic thing that is hidden away from us and therefore quantum physics is not complete, Bohr's view is that quantum physics is complete, so there is intrinsic randomness. Having not known how to test for hidden variables, it became an interpretation argument, not of interest to most physicist then.

Two particles which are entangled are such that the two particles will give correlated (or anti-correlated) results when measured using the same measurements. Yet according to Bohr, the two particles has no intrinsic agreed-upon values before the measurement, according to Einstein, they have! How to test it?

Let’s go back to the teacher and students in the classroom. This time, the teacher tells the student that their goal is to violate this thing called Bell’s inequality. To make it more explicit and it's really simple maths, here's the CHSH inequality, a type of Bell’s inequality:

The system is that we have two rooms far far away from each other, in essence, they are located in different galaxies, no communication is possible because of the speed of light limiting the information transfer between the two rooms. We label the rooms: Arahant and Bodhisattva. The students are to come out in pairs of the classroom located in the middle and go to arahant room and bodhisattva room, one student each.

The students will be asked questions called 1 or 2. They have to answer either 1 or -1. Here's the labelling. The two rooms are A and B. The two questions are Ax or By with {x,y}∈{1,2} where 1 and 2 represent the two questions and {ax or by}∈{−1,1} as the two possible answers, -1 representing no, 1 representing yes.

So we have the term: a1(b1+b2)+a2(b1−b2)=±2. This is self-evident, please substitute in the values to verify yourself. Note: in case you still don't get the notation, a1 denotes the answer when we ask the Arahant room student the first question a2 for the second question, it can be -1 or 1, and so on for b...

Of course, in one run of asking the question, we cannot get that term, we need to ask lots of times (with particles and light, it's much faster than asking students), and average over it, so it's more of the average is bounded by this inequality. S= ++ ≤2 It's called the CHSH inequality, a type of Bell's inequality.

The goal is to have a value of S above 2. That’s the violation of Bell’s inequality.

Before the class sends out the two students, the class can meet up and agree upon a strategy, then each pair of students are separated by a large distance or any way we restrict them not to communicate with each other, not even mind-reading. They each give one of two answers to each question, and we ask them often (easier with particles and light). Then we take their answers, collect them and they must satisfy this CHSH inequality.

The students discussed and came out with the ideal table of answers:

So for each pair of students going out, the one going into room arahant only have to answer 1, whatever the question is. The one going to the room Bodhisattva has to answer 1, except if they got the question B2 and if they know that the question A2 is going to be asked of student in room arahant. The main difficulty is, how would student B know what question student A got? They are too far apart, communication is not allowed. They cannot know the exact order questions they are going to get beforehand.

Say if students who goes into room B decide to go for random answering if they got the question B2, on the faint hope that enough of the answer -1 will coincide with the question A2. We expect 50% of it will, and 50% of it will not.

So let’s look at the statistics.

and are both zero because while a always are 1, b2 take turns to alternate between 1 and -1, so it averages out to zero. Mere allowing for randomisation and denying counterfactual definiteness no longer works to simulate quantum results when the quantum system has two parts, not just one.

It seems that Bell's inequality is obvious and cannot ever be violated, and it's trivial. Yet it was violated by entangled particles! We have skipped some few assumptions to arrive at the CHSH inequality, and here they are. The value for S must be less than 2 if we have 3 assumptions

There is realism, or counterfactual definiteness. The students have ready answers for each possible questions, so the random answering above is actually breaking this assumption already. These ready answers can be coordinated while they are in the classroom, for example, they synchronise their watches, and answer 1 if the minute hand is pointing to even number, and answer -1 if the minute hand is pointing to odd number.

Parameter independence (or no signalling/locality), that is the answer to one room is independent of the question I ask the student in the other room. This is enforced by the no-communication between two parties (too far apart and so on...) Special relativity can be made to protect this assumption.

Measurement independence (or free will/ freedom) the teachers are free to choose to ask which questions and the students do not know the ordering of questions asked beforehand.

All three are perfectly reasonable in any classical system.

Violation of Bell's inequality says that either one of the 3 above must be wrong.

Most physicists say counterfactual definiteness is wrong, there is intrinsic randomness in nature or at least properties do not exist before being measured.

There are interpretations with locality wrong, deterministic in nature, but since the signalling is hidden, no time travel or faster than light that we can use. Quite problematic and challenges Special relativity, not popular but still possible based on the violation of Bell's inequality alone.

And if people vote for freedom being wrong, there is no point to science, life and the universe. Superdeterminism is a bleak interpretation.

Let’s go back to the game, and see if we relaxed one of the 3 rules, can the arahant and Bodhisattva room students conspire to win and violate CHSH inequality?

So to simulate that, say they decide to bring along their mobile phones to the questioning areas and text each other their questions and answers. Yet, this strategy breaks down if we wait until they are light years apart before questioning them, recording it, and wait for years to bring the two sides together for analysis. So for the time being, we pretend that the mobile phone is specially connected to wormholes and circumvent the speed of light no signalling limit. They easily attain their ideal scenario. S=4. We call it PR Box.

Actually this violation reaching to PR box is not reached by quantum particles. Quantum strangely enough only violates up to S=2.828… that means quantum non-locality is weird, but not the maximum weirdness possible. It’s this weird space of CHSH inequality violation that is non-local yet obeys no signalling. Thus the meaning of non-locality in quantum doesn’t mean faster than light signalling. We cannot use quantum entangled particles so far to send meaningful information faster than light. Quantum seems to be determined to act in a weird way, which violates our classical notion of locality, yet have a peaceful co-existence with special relativity.

This was a line of research which I was briefly involved in a small part during my undergraduate days. The researchers in Centre for Quantum Technologies in Singapore were searching for a physical principle to explain why quantum non-locality is limited as compared to the space of possible non-locality. So far, I do not think they have succeeded in getting a full limit, but many other insights into links between quantum and information theory arise from there and one of the interpretations involve rewriting the axioms of quantum to be a quantum information-theoretic inspired limits and derive the standard quantum physics from there.

The PR box example is actually the maximum non-locality that theoretical physics allows, bounded by no-signalling. So PR box still satisfy special relativity due to no signalling, however, they do not exist in the real physical world as it would violate several information-theoretic principles.

The PR box can be produced too if they know beforehand what questions they each are going to get, so no freedom of the questioner to ask questions. Yet, purely relaxing counterfactual definiteness cannot reproduce it. It’s because Bell’s theorem is not meant to test for purely that. We have another inequality called Leggett’s inequality to help with that (more on it later).

Puzzled by the strange behaviour of quantum, the students looked online to learn how entangled particles behave. Say using spin entangled electrons pairs, they both must have opposite spin, but whether they are spin up or down, it’s undecided until the moment they are measured. So if say electron A got measured to be spin up in z-axis, we know that electron B is spin down in z-axis immediately. With this correlation and suitable choice of angles of measuring the spin, experiments had shown that entangled particle pairs do violate Bell’s inequality, be it photon or electron. Like entangled photons (light) where we measure the polarisation angel, so the questions are actually polarisation settings which involve angles. The polarization of entangled photon pairs is correlated. A suitable choice of 3 angles across the 4 questions of A1, A2, B1, B2 allows for Bell’s inequality violation to the maximum for the quantum case. The different angles allow for more subtle distribution of probabilities to only ensure S goes to 2.828… and not more for the quantum case.

The teacher then by using some real magic, transformed entangled particles into a rival class of students. These groups of students are shielded from the rest of the world to prevent them from losing their quantum coherence nature. Yet, when they enter into the room A and B for each entangled pairs, given the same question by A and B, they answer with the same result. Perfect correlation. Say if we denote entangled student in room A got asked if he is a cat person and the student in room B also got the question if she’s a cat person. Both will answer either yes or no. When we compare the statistics later, each pair of entangled student answers perfectly well.

So what? Asked the group of regular students. So when asked some series of suitable questions involving angles, these entangled particles violated CHSH inequality! Can the normal classical students do that?

The students then try to simulate entangled particles without using an actual quantum entangled particle to see the inner mechanism inside it. The first idea they had was to use a rope to connect the students. Student pairs as they move to room A and B, they carry the rope along with them. When student A got question 2, student A will use Morse code to signal to student B both his answer and the question he receives, then student B can try to replicate quantum results.

The teachers then frown upon this method. She then spends some money from the school to actually make room A and room B to be far away. Say even send one student to Mars on the upcoming human landing on Mars mission. Now it takes several minutes for light to travel from Earth to Mars, and in that time, there’s no way for internal communication to happen between the two entangled particles. The rope idea is prevented by special relativity unless we really believe that entangled particles are like wormholes (which is one of the serious physics ideas floating out there, google ER=EPR), and that they do directly communicate with each other.

Quick note, even if entangled particles do internal communication, it’s hidden from us by the random results they produce in measurement. It’s due to this inherent randomness that we cannot use entanglement correlation to communicate faster than light. So any claims by anyone who only half-read some catchy popular science article title about quantum entanglement who says that with entanglement, we can communicate faster than light, you can just ask them to study quantum physics properly. Quantum non-locality is strictly within the bounds of no signalling. Don’t worry about it, it’s one of the first things undergraduate or graduates physics students try to do when first learning about it and we all failed and learnt that it is indeed due to the random outcomes of the measurement which renders entanglement as non-local yet non-signalling, a cool weird nature.

Experimentally, Bell’s inequality violation has been tested on entangled particles, with the distance between the two particles as far away as 18km apart, using fibre optics to send the light to another lab far far away. With super fast switching, they managed to ask the entangled photons questions far faster than it is possible for them to coordinate their answers via some secret communication. Assuming no superluminal communication between them.

Well, ok, no rope, so what’s so strange about correlation anyway? Classically, we have the example of the Bertlmann’s socks. John Bell wrote about his friend Dr. Bertlmann as a person who couldn’t be bothered to wear matching socks so he takes the first two he has and wear them. So on any given day, if you see the first foot he comes into the room as pink socks, you can be sure that the other sock is not pink. Nothing strange here. So what’s the difference with entanglement?

The main difference is, before measurement, the entangled particles can be either pink or not pink, we do not know. According to Copenhagen interpretation, there’s no value before the measurement, reality only comes into being when we measure it. There’s the probabilistic part of quantum which comes in again. We call it superposition of the states of pink and not pink. For photons, it can be superposition of polarisation in the horizontal and vertical axis, for electron spin, it can be superposition of up and down spin in z-axis. Any legitimate quantum states can be superpositioned together as long as they had not been measured, and thus retain their coherence, and as long as these quantum states are commutable (can be measured together).

In Copenhagen picture, the entangled particles acts as one quantum system. It doesn’t matter how far away in space they are, once the measurement is one, the collapse of the wavefunction happens and then once photon in A shows a result, we know immediately the exact value of photon B. Before measurement, there was no sure answer. This happens no matter if photon A is at the distance of half a universe away from photon B.

This type of correlation is not found at all in the classical world. The students were not convinced. They tried to gather a pink and a red sock they have to put into a bin. Then a student blindfold himself, select the two socks from the bin, switch it around and hand them over to the student pairs who will go to room A and B, one sock each. The students put the socks into their pocket, not looking at it, and only take it out to see it and try to answer based on their correlation, if one has red, we know the other has pink immediately. The pink and red colour can be mapped to a strategy to answer 1 or -1 to specific questions. This is not the same thing as real quantum entanglement, they didn’t perform better at the game. They have counterfactual definiteness. Before asking the students what colour the socks are, we know the socks already have a predetermined colour. With predetermined answers, we cannot expect b2 to have the ability to change answers based on different questions of A1 or A2. Thus no hope of producing quantum or PR box-like correlation.
The teacher finally felt that the students are ready for a simple Bell’s inequality derivation. She selected three students up, each student having a label of an angle: x, y and z. To translate this to CHSH, the questions that were given to the students can have a combination of two of the three angles. Notice that Room A only asks between x and y, and Room B only asks between y and z, so it fits with only two questions per room. A1 =x, A2=B1=y, B2=z. Note that the choice of degrees to produce violation may differ due to different form of the Bell’s inequalities.

Each of run the experiment can only explore two of the three angles. The heads or tails, 0 or 1 corresponds to the student’s 1 and -1 answer. As the table shows for the coin settings, the implicit assumption is that there’s counterfactual definiteness. Even if the experiment didn’t ask about z, we assumed that there’s a ready value for them. So any hidden variable which is local and counterfactual definite cannot violate Bell’s inequality. For quantum interpretations which deny counterfactual definiteness, they have no issues with violating Bell’s inequality.

Quantum entanglement was revealed to be a real effect of nature and since then it has been utilised in at least 3 major useful experiments and technologies.

Quantum teleportation. This has less practical usage, but still is a marvellous show of the possibility of quantum technologies. The thing which is teleported is actually only quantum information. The sending and receiving side both have to have the materials ready and entangled beforehand. The quantum object to be teleported has to be coherent (no wavefunction collapse) to interact with the prepared entangled bunch of particles at the sending end. Then the object to be teleported is destroyed by allowing it to interact with the sending entangled particles, we do some measurements, collect some classical information about the measurement, then send it at the speed of light to the receiving end. The receiving end has only the previously entangled particles, now no longer entangled due to the other end having interacted with measurements. They wait patiently for the classical data to arrive before they can do some manipulation to transform the receiving end stuffs into the quantum information of the thing we teleported. If they randomly try to manipulate the receiving end stuffs, the process is likely to fail. The classical data sent is not the same even if we teleport the exact same thing because of quantum inherent randomness involved in the measurement process. The impractical side is that large objects like human bodies are never observed to be in quantum coherence, too much interference with the environment which causes the wavefunction to collapse. And if we want to quantum teleport a living being, it’s basically to kill it on the sending side, and recover it on the receiving side. It’s not known if the mind would follow, does it count as death and rebirth in the same body but different place? Or maybe some other beings get reborn into the new body?

What parts of even historically harmful traditions remain harvestable? There is maturity in salvaging and holding aspects of culture with nuance rather than complete abandonment. Choose how you will honor the complexity of where you came from and where you are going. But, while you contemplate this, make sure to create and find the space to rest, hibernate, recuperate. Each of us has something to grieve this year; open yourself up to the well and flood of it when you have a safe moment to yourself. Move your body with the grief. Stretch. Run. Jump. Cry. Sob. Scream. Shake. We have oscillated from hysteria and violence this year many times over, so take the time and space you need to release this stored energy. We have work to do.

The recipes for November included recognizing where you support systems you don’t believe in, noticing which communities have value to you, considering where you have given others consent to represent you, and finding the building block of your interests and pleasure.
With the election and the agonizingly slow process of getting the actual results, I thought a lot about the systems I am frustrated with and refuse to support in the future. I also asked my employers if we will get election day off in the future; I’ve become something of a squeaky wheel there. I’ve also spent time and energy into building the new systems I want to exist. For starters, I have been delivering donated yarn to fellow crochet and knit crafters to help make warm garments for houseless folx. Additionally, I’ve put a lot of thought into how the media is shaping the way we all interact in the world.
Regarding the value of community, I have relied more heavily on the inherent value there, even independent of specific activities we might do together. The people in my social network are hard at work in transforming the world into something we can all be proud of, and having them as friends is enormously valuable to me. I’ve also realized that, the more I know about someone, the more I need to grapple with whether or not their values align with mine as I can no longer feign ignorance about it. Those interactions take a little more work to get to a philosophically aligned space, but putting in that labor reduces the residue of the actions I take with that person, and I have found this to be a valuable practice with friends, family, and strangers where applicable.
There is very little representation I am opting into. I have a lot of frustrations with the way government handles representation, and I have little faith in how others might represent me, especially when we do not fully understand each other. However, I cannot be and do everything at once, so I recognized that I must make some compromises. I have enjoyed following and getting to know progressive congresspeople coming in now that the election is over and watching them really stick to their guns about their platforms and policies, and it makes me proud, even if they do not directly represent me in my location.
Regarding my relationship to media, I have determined that engaging on very popular posts (for instance) is not always the most valuable way to be spending my energy. Asking what do I want out of this interaction? is a good way to decide whether to put time and energy there. However, this month, I found very valuable ways to share major news with a public group unrelated to my friend group that allowed me to keep surprises from my friends while still engaging with others about my own excitement. It was a fun new way to use the platform. Otherwise, I’m still grappling with what to do about news media, but I think that will be an ongoing process.
Lately, the building block and foundational element to my pleasure has been crocheting. Something about it is at once somatic and philosophical and really connects my mind and body in a way that feels at once comforting and productive. In thinking about maximizing the pleasure I get from this and expanding it to the rest of my life, I have learned how to prioritize projects where I am learning something as those are often the most satisfying. I also have identified that, when I start to get lazy about a pattern, there is something present that I am not enjoying, and finding that and learning how to navigate out of that has improved the ways I view laziness in the rest of my life. Specifically, I now feel like laziness is a cue to look at why I don’t enjoy what I’m presently doing.

Its established at some events if you considered it as canon that the Throne of Heroes is like Chaldea. There's old posts, comments I've seen before that always say that the Throne is nothing but a database where the heroes, villains and others marked by humanity's collective belief. Nothing but a storage facility that keep them in there in freezer or shelved like books in a big library. But so far we've reached in the events in FGO, its noted mentioning that the Throne is very much like Chaldea, though a bit more fancy and exclusive for anyone for that matters. Heroic Spirits often interact each other and might even battle themselves. Benienma in her profile says that popular demand by others, she periodically conducts cooking classes at the Throne. Interesting to say at the least that the Throne of Heroes is not just a mere data storage but a hub for everyone to enjoy their afterlife.
Open for opinions though if you agree or not that the Throne is like what I said above. This is just a thought came to me and really old post from Fate stay night reddit that everyone in there leans more that the Throne is nothing more and nothing less than a memory storage on a computer.

2020.12.02 01:11 DeppStepp A serious talk about Dream’s anti-stans and some of his controversies

Before let’s get this started I’m going to say this. Everyone had the right to NOT like someone or something and they have the exact same right to say that they don’t like it on line and also this will most likely be a long post. Also I’m not talking about the people who hate stans, well kinda. These people I’m talking about will most definitely hate Dream Stans for sure but it’s not about them specifically but more of people who hate Dream.
A lot of people that don’t dig deep into Dream and maybe just know about him or watched some of his videos will most likely agree that he’s well liked whether they themselves like him or not. He has 13.5 million subs that most have been gained this year. There’s maybe 4 subreddits about him with one having over 100K people. Dream has 4 channels with a combined of almost 20 million and has participated in both MCC and MCM. He has tons of fans on Twitter and YouTube who makes videos and stuff about him and has tons of popular youtuber friends and streamers. However Dream has been having a lot of build up hatred over the course of his massive growth. Some people really dislike him.
 Dream has also had controversies in his past with some still being in ‘affect’ today. Dream has some toxic fans and he doesn’t really ‘deal’ with them the best way. This is how a lot of fanbases are hated on. Undertale, Steve Universe, Fortnine, FNAF and many more has suffered this and some has paid the price for it. Dream has also been accused of faking his manhunts and Minecraft videos, with some still believing he’s faked it to this day despite him posting the full unedited video of this manhunt but besides it his hate has been a minority. However that changed with MC’s latest mob vote. As most people on here knows Dream supported the voting of Glowsquid a little *to much* although Dream came out and said that he was joking and being Ironic about the voting there was ton of outrage for the glowsquid getting voted in. They accused Dream of rigging the votes and that if he didn’t say anything then the glow squid would have lost, which might’ve been the case but it’s hard to know for certain how many people voted for the glowsquid because of Dream and it caused people being accused of being a toxic Dream Stan if they said they voted for it. It also didn’t help with in Dream vs Technoblade some people voiced how they hated that Techno won and unsubbed from him which caused people to hate his fans more and generalized them all. 
Now with one of Dreams bigger controversies that affects him and his reputation to this day. A while ago Dream was accused of Cheating his speed runs after someone noticed Dream had gotten lucky with his pearl trades and some thought he was a little to lucky. Someone tried to see what were the odds that Dream could’ve gotten those pearl trades in normal Minecraft which they recorded data and came to the conclusion that there is a 1 in 40 billion chance that Dream got the pearl trades without cheating. Now this had the speed running community to hate him more of it because there’s a big chance he cheated.
This seems like an open-and-shut case right? A big youtuber who wants more fame cheated in a less noticeable case which is 1 in 40 billion chance that he didn’t, making it impossible for him to not cheat. However statistics aren’t that simple. In 1960’s a woman was assaulted and robbed of her purse by a blonde woman with a ponytail and ran off into a car with an African American man and Janet and Malcolm Collins who matched every description that the woman described and were arrested and seen as guilty by the court. What does this have to do with Dream? Well a mathematician did the numbers and stated that there was a 1 in 12 million chance that they were innocent just on their descriptions, and that was how that was the nail in the coffin. There then was an appeal trial. The jury then learned that it was very possible that they could be innocent. More researched showed that the statistic was 100% accurate but were misleading. It turned out in the location it happened there was at least a 40% chance they were innocent based on statistics of the location being in. Statistics is a very powerful tool that can be manipulated to fit a conclusion.
Now this trial is different than Dream as that was real life and his was in Minecraft but there are factors that aren’t being included. It’s only including the chance that anyone with that good of a pearl trades could be that lucky without cheats and NOT Dream. Dream has no real reason of cheating except to get a world record but why now? Why risk his reputation of a good speedrunner when people heavily monitor him and can claim he cheats on anything based on very small details? Why all of the sudden does he cheat to get a speed run yet not even getting the fastest run on the charts? Another is why would dream be so vocal about the speed runs and even bring it up in places where he didn’t need to? Why would he accuse some other people of cheating when he does the same? There’s just so many questions that would be made leading to this conclusion. There has also been an official statement saying that 1 in 40 billion is false and wrong, and they haven’t found what the odds really are.
Now about actual Dream hating. It is no real secret that people hate Dream. I’ve seen many people making posts and commenting how much they hate Dream, Dream was voted on the naughty list by Santa decides. There was even a subreddit made for people who hate Dream. Even some people who verify speed runs and admins for it openly hate Dream (Evidence: https://imgur.com/a/4BFry8C). This brings problems to Dream as some of them can be the ones that decide if Dream did cheat or not in his speedruns.
Many of people have tried to look into the mind of Dream why he does things. After Dream released his analysis of the 100k duel Dream received a lot of hate for things he said. He said that what he could’ve done to win and many people took it the wrong way. They thought Dream was trying to undermine Techno and prop himself up to inflate his god-complex. Dream doesn’t stream DreamSMP much and some people said that it was because Dream has a god-complex and that he doesn’t stream it as he feels superior to other people on the SMP when that isn’t the case.
Now with all of this being said I am biased. I support Dream and I believe he didn’t fake it and someone who wasn’t biased/was biased against Dream would more than likely come to a different conclusion to this and I accept that. I personally think Dream gets way to much hate despite his mistakes. In the end Dream is a human just like us. He doesn’t have a god-complex and he isn’t a higher power, he’s just like us but with a lot of popularity. We all make stupid mistakes and Dreams are just more vocal as if someone’s popular there’s bound to lead to people being hated by some.
Also don’t attack people because they like or hate something. Try hearing them out and don’t chalk them up to be a Stan or a hater, and not just about Dream but with anything in general. A lot of people are reasonable and if you listen to them they might make some good points. Also sorry if I got a little off task, it’s just I’m passionate about this right now.

The following is a sardonic commentary on an electric car manufacturer who shall remain nameless. I freely mix facts, stretch the truth, rumor, distort news reports and just plain employ sarcasm to ridicule some of the dirty little secrets of the Green Energy movement, its pimps and its products.
Scene: A shiny automobile showroom. Idle sales reps chat in the corner. Customer enters.
Salesman: [Puts hip flask away, walks over to customer.] Good afternoon Sir, welcome to Dazzler Motors. How may I help you?
Customer: Well I'm interested in electric cars in general, I've heard a lot of good things and to be honest a few bad things about them and I'm trying to find out the whole story.
S: Well sir, you’ve come to the right place! May I point out the advantages of electric technology? In the first place it's zero emissions. There's nothing cleaner on God's green earth than electric vehicles. “Green” is the operative word. We are all in favor of stamping out those fossil fuels and the greenhouse gases they cause. We are committed to a zero-emission future for the betterment of mankind.
S: [Aside:] And we’re making quite a bit of green off the customer and government!
C: Pardon me, I didn’t catch that, did you say something?
S: No sir, I was just clearing my throat.
C: [Aside:] Whew! What kind of mouthwash does he use? I can smell the alcohol, but usually it’s minty. He smells like Daddy used to when he’d been working late at the office.
C: OK, of course I agree that electricity in and of itself is not environmentally polluting. But aren't you neglecting the fact that the lion’s share of electricity generated in the United States and indeed worldwide has to be generated from fossil fuels?
S: A good point sir! I can see you’re an educated man. But you know that wind, solar and other renewable energy is up and coming and is the future. In fact I think it’s UN Agenda 21 that encourages zero-emissions energy by the year 2050. Don't you want to hop on board with such an environmentally friendly agenda? Be the first one on the chopping block, er, I mean, on your block, with one of our new models!
C: Well, frankly, I'm not entirely convinced it makes sense financially. Now don't get me wrong, nobody wants to deliberately harm the environment. Still, I have a lot of misgivings about this alternative energy thing. Is it economically competitive with existing technologies? If so why isn't it being adopted more widely? Why the need for government or other subsidies and sometimes mandates for it, if this is such a no-brainer win-win situation?
S: Ah, a critical thinker. That's very good sir! We always say an educated customer is a pain in the as-, I mean, is our best asset. [Points to a car.] Here, look at the shiny paint job we use on the model A. C: Well, actually I was hoping to find some kind of reliable figures for the total lifetime cost of an electric vehicle. S: Well, sir that's very observant of you. To be honest electric vehicles are still a niche product. Most early adopters are the technologically savvy whose first concern is not necessarily the cost per mile to operate them, rather they are ecologically conscious.
C: So in other words you're admitting they cost significantly more to operate than a regular internal combustion vehicle?
S: Now sir, don't put words in my mouth. I said no such thing. Many of our models are price competitive with the higher-end models of conventional manufacturers like Cadillac, Mercury, BMW or Mercedes-Benz. And secondly, you must expect to pay more for a premium, high-quality product.
C: Is that your way of saying your base model costs two or three times a similar base model of a mass-produced car?
S: Our vehicles do cost more up front it’s true, but the consumer will more than recoup that initial investment over the much longer expected lifetime of the vehicle.
C: Well, that would be easier to verify if we had reliable data for the service life of a vehicle.
S: Let me tell you about some of the advantages of our vehicles. Not the least of them is their safety. For example by not using gasoline you avoid the danger of carrying around many gallons of an extremely flammable liquid in the event of a crash.
C: That would seem to be a safety consideration, although regular vehicles bursting into flames is a pretty rare occurrence from what I read. On the other hand do you have any comments on the recent accident of one of your models for the battery exploded and sent flaming debris into two houses and caught them on fire? That's a pretty bad performance for a single-vehicle wreck don't you think?
S: Eh, er, well let me tell you about automatic navigation software. In fact under optimum conditions you can let the car do all the driving and you don't have to pay any attention to the road at all.
C: well, forgive my doubt but I know there's still a few bugs in the system. Haven’t there been a few incidents where the car was on autopilot and ran over pedestrians or caused some other kind of accident that an attentive human driver might have avoided?
S: Ah, yes that's true I concede. The technology still hasn't been quite perfected. The owner’s manual specifically suggests the driver not nap in the back set while the car is driving. In at least one of those accidents the driver was completely asleep or was watching a movie or something. It’s not really our fault that some drivers are idiots, wouldn’t you agree?
C: You got that right! Well, for something as critical and literally a life-or-death matter is operating a 4000 pound vehicle, maybe I'm just expecting too much of technology. But don't you think it unfair to claim a car doesn't require a driver, and then to backpedal that statement and say you need an awake alert driver to take back control of the vehicle on a moment's notice? Wouldn’t it be safer to not claim automatic driving at all?
S: You're not an attorney or somebody from the NTSB are you?
C: No no not at all. I'm just an average consumer interested in researching EVs because they promise so much new technology, an improvement over the dinosaur burner of yore. They’re all the rage now, you’d think they were the ultimate thing to buy.
S: well, might you be interested in our model B sports coupe. It has an electrically operated roof, electrically operated power steering, and by golly, everything on the car is electrically operated because it runs on electricity.
C: Well it does look sexy. Hey service is a question though, I don't expect you to have a shop in every town but I'm a little bit concerned because you basically have a monopoly position. So anybody who buys a car from you has no choice but to use your garages for service.
S: well, we like to point out that our vehicles require much less service than a conventional internal combustion engine. For example you'll never need an oil change filter any emissions testing or similar work on your car if you buy one of ours.
C: Absolutely true, but the rest of the car more or less is going to be exactly the same components you'd find in a conventional fossil fuel burning vehicle. In fact I remember some reports that you early models and had problems with suspension or electrical or computer system failures. Some of those are routine and any new technology. But I'd also read some unfavorable reports I think it was about from the Netherlands that you had a taxi service that had issues and especially in getting them serviced. And had even started a class action lawsuit...
S: Let me ask the boss… [walks out of room for few minutes, returns, weaving a bit]

C: You know, a critical part of your technology is the total reliance on the electric grid. Even though our country is wired for electricity, you can't just plug in one of your cars just anywhere and expect it to charge.
S: no, that's not true. In fact you can recharge one of our cars anywhere there is a hundred twenty volt AC residential current available, it takes less than a day, and that is virtually anywhere in the United States. And may I point out that we have an ever-growing network of high speed Chargers available that…
C: Oh please. I know what you say is true, but I also know that it would take 24 hours to bring one of your cars to full charge using regular house current. For faster charging you need a special charging station and those are very limited in short supply, usually only in major urban areas. And what happens if I run the charge down far from the nearest charging station? It’s not like a tow truck can bring me a jerry can with five gallons of electricity. Nope, I’ll need to have it towed somewhere it can be recharged. In fact, don’t you think that even a quick charge requiring a few hours puts your EV at a disadvantage to a gas-powered car, that can be tanked up in a few minutes at thousands of locations?
S: did I mention we have some of the best Battery Technology?
C: yes, that was another question I had. While the batteries clearly are the latest technology, isn't it true that they are only of a limited life expectancy? What is the cost of consumers when they finally need replacing? How soon will they need to be replaced?
S: our warranty covers any failures within the warranty, usually 8 years or 150,000 miles.. And therefore…
C: That sounds reasonable, and I’ve seen claims that out-of-warranty replacement will cost no more than $7000. Still I remain skeptical. Lithium Ion is established tech, sure, but in smaller appliances no way do you get that kind of battery life. They fail after just a few years. Not so much fail, but hold a lesser charge as the number of charges over its lifespan are used. And the fast charging generates more heat, which shortens lifespan even quicker. Isn't it true that replacing them costs more than the depreciated car is worth? I know from personal experience you can buy a whole new engine and transmission for a standard car, for about the same cost, although putting that much money into an old beater usually isn’t worthwhile. Would a Dazzler be any different?
S: Well, we guarantee they hold 70% charge. As for the car’s residual value, I haven’t checked.
Um…Well, may I say that our batteries are continually improving as the technology advances. In fact, you should consider that, even if batteries must be replaced every few years, there is no reason that newer technology batteries won’t fit into legacy vehicles. Of course, the replacement batteries will be at the customer’s expense. Our safety record is much better. We’ve only had six battery fires in the past...
C: And another thing. Now don’t get me wrong, in principle an all-electric car is a great idea, and even the charging issue could be improved, as new charging locations are installed, and a person could carefully plot his travels. But don’t you agree that the real Achilles Heel of the whole idea is the battery? Face it, even for all the technological advances, the battery is a heavy, bulky part of the package. But unavoidable. There is still the environmental cost to build and to dispose of the battery. Did you know that many of the components are highly toxic? That’s why, in addition to keeping labor costs low, that these batteries are assembled and disposed of in third-world countries that have few, if any, environmental protection laws, and care about as much for worker safety? And finally, even if your car had zero environmental liabilities of its own, which of course is untrue, do you know that, on the average, our electricity is generated from about ⅔ fossil fuels and 20% nuclear? Right now, less than 20% from renewables, and that’s not considering the subsidies and other drawbacks. So essentially if I buy an EV, I’m still driving a car four-fifths powered by fossil and nuke energy!
S: [Bead of sweat rolls off forehead], er, um…Your Dazzler could be completely green if you charged it with zero-emissions solar…
C: Yeah right, maybe if I had my whole roof covered with solar panels, it might charge the car in a month of sunny days...
S: [sighs, pulls at collar with hooked finger]
C: I’m sorry I’m so down on you today. Please tell me about this car here….
S: Which new models are you interested in? Did you know we have easy financing, if you own your own home free and clear we offer a 15-year mortgage at a relatively low interest rate...
C: um… isn't it true, that your business model is fundamentally flawed, you have horribly overpriced products, and your primary consumer is a virtue signaling, highly educated, Progressive with an annual income triple that of the average citizen? Admit it, half the reason people buy these expensive cars is so that they can park closest to the office building in one of the two spaces available that actually have charging facilities? Yeah, right, like that is great for the first two early adopters, but what about number three? He’s screwed. And what about when more people buy EVs? Not only have they lost a cushy parking space, but they can’t even charge the car at work if they have to. How do you ever expect to sell enough vehicles to justify the astronomical price of your stock? You should be ashamed of yourself. How the hell did a company like you get added to the S&P 500?
S: So what? Chrysler used to be in it before they went bust, and come to think of it, Enron was in there until...
C: Jeez, you guys are just milking the taxpayer. Not only are there subsidies for rich individuals and corporations to buy your product, you usually get tax breaks on building a factory. Then, when the breaks are set to expire, you cobble up some lame excuse to close that factory, moving to another state or cheaper labor country, leaving a thousand unemployed people who end up getting hooked on opioids and…
S: We throw in a free pine tree shaped air freshener if you...
C: There’s nothing wrong with subsidies, up to a point, I’d agree, but talk about excess. There was a case many years ago, in Arizona I think, that was overly generous. They wanted to encourage the use of alternative fuels, and some clever people bought expensive RVs and had inexpensive dual-fuel propane kits installed. Imagine that...a thousand bucks in parts, a tiny tank of propane that might run one of those pigs for fifty miles, and the State was obligated to pay tens of thousands of dollars in subsidies. Talk about a poorly thought out plan. Needless to say, they quickly scrapped it. The problem with nearly all these programs is that they often freeze out the little guy, and it’s just their nature that they cause people to try and game the system, often to great advantage, as the Arizona example shows.
S: Well yes Sir, I agree that sounds like a silly subsidy. But may I point out that was for retrofitting existing fossil fuel vehicles with unwieldy bottled gas? Sure that works in some applications, but usually only local fleet usage like city busses or delivery trucks. You haven’t heard about anything like that happening with electricity, have you?
C: You gotta be kidding me! Have you ever heard of the mess some States or Countries have in subsidizing solar or wind power? Sure, covering your house’s roof with solar panels is popular, if the local government or utility (it’s always taxpayer’s money being spent) pays for most or all of it! And what’s worse, is that the utility is obligated to buy the trickle of power generated, often at a loss. California has electric rates 50% higher the national average and they’re still getting rolling blackouts. Does any of that sound economically sane to you?
S: Well, it’s not really fair to compare a car company with a public utility, is it?
C: You don’t get off the hook that easily. I know you are also in the storage battery business. But let’s stick to EVs today. I’m just pissed at all these subsidies, and they seem to be for things that don’t make a lot of financial sense, and they don’t achieve the results that are promised at the outset, and they distort the free market. They only seem to benefit the contractors, the sellers of the gizmos, but rarely the consumer and certainly not the taxpayer. Oh, did I mention the government officials who promote these schemes almost always get lavish praise for being environmentally conscious, but you almost never hear about them curtailing these programs? Shakespeare had it ass backwards in that Julius Caesar play: the evil that men do is hushed up and the good they allegedly did is trumpeted in the local press.

I'm reading two books right now in parallax. I'm halfway through both, so this story is incomplete as of yet. But it's worth sharing what I've found thus far.
One is an ethnographic study of the post-Lacanian French psychoanalytic scene. It's the first book, published in '78, by the MIT professor who did the absolute best studies of children and microcomputers in the 80s, and the effects of computer simulation upon people and society in the 90s and 2000s. Now her latest work is on what screen-time and smartphones are doing to destroy kid's abilities to communicate.
But her first book is clearly the hidden ground for all the rest, and tells a very important story. Psychoanalysis was taken up very quickly in America in the early 1900s because America was very frontier-ish and didn't have too much of a culture yet, so people were eager to soak up a theory of self rooted in dreams. And then, quickly, American Psychoanalysis transformed something suitable for the American culture: a means of coping and strengthening the ego. In short order, psychoanalysis became "monopolized" (let's say) as a field of medicine, and its original larger scope of art and literary theory, social studies etc. was stymied. In America, Freud became synonymous with psychology and therapy, and the goal was having a robust, healthy ego.
France was a different story. Psychology didn't really take at the beginning because they already had culture and structure. The fourth French Republic was quite sturdy and self-secure already in it's pomp and pageantry, and had it's own home-grown psychology in the forms of Henri Bergson and Janet. Sure, some artists looked at psychoanalysis, however uncovering hidden motives, rooted in sex and incest, quite an anathema to a society built on strong family ties and rational thinking. Freud was some weird-ass subversive German.
Okay, let's switch track to the second book for a second. This book is about how the Freudian idea of the unconscious was taken up, in the 40s and 50s, by the Cyberneticists at the Macy Conference, and the founders of modern communication and information theory.] It came out in 2010. The author tells the story of Basic English, which was literally George Orwell's Newspeak—it's a real thing, and it was created in part by one of Marshall McLuhan's professors. Claude Shannon developed his information theory by putting Basic English at one end of a spectrum, and James Joyce's Finnegans Wake (McLuhan's primary reference text for his communications theory) on the other end, and developed the idea of information entropy.
To measure entropy, one see's how easily one can predict what comes next—and few words of course means higher degree of predictability and vice-versa. In doing this, Shannon turned the phonetic alphabet into an ideographic series of symbols, and measured them statistically in various books (lots of Us following Qs, plenty of Es, very few Xs, etc.). Information theory, of course, is absolutely essential to modern communications infrastructure, especially with signal/data compression, etc. For instance, highly "entropic" action films are harder to compress into digital video than talking head news-casts where little in the visual image changes. A single talking voice is better compressed in one audio codec than a high-fidelity, polyphonic orchestral piece.
But in it's beginning, information theory dealt with ENGLISH. Not just language—English. But not the spoken language English, but the alphabetically typed english where the letters were divorced from their meaning. In probability, the odds of an occurrence are measured against every other possible outcome. And in structural linguistics, a chosen symbol occurs in relation to every other symbol which might have occured. The Americans developing this stuff, living in their psychoanalytic culture, began to relate the chosen word to the conscious, compared to the unchosen structure of words not picked to Freud's unconscious. i.e. what was repressed. You know who was studying the Macy Conferences and the cyberneticists intently? Jacques Lacan.
Okay back to the first book. Psychoanalysis was relatively underground and ignored in France before 1968. "Psychoanlysis" meant, to the French, that awful American ego-centric kind—French psychoanalysts thought America had ruined Freud with their adaptation of his theories, steering him from the early dream stuff into the later superego-ego-id formalism.
But that summer, between May and June, there was a giant emancipatory nation-wide Marxist strike where everything shut down, workers seized all the means of production, and people roamed the streets and gushed their repressions for a while. Hippy shit, French style. Shit calmed down in literally two months and it was back to business, superficially, but psychologically everything changed. And all the best explanations for what-the-fuck just happened came from psychoanalysis, which became super popular literally overnight. And psychoanalysis in France was Jacques Lacan. And Derrida and Foucault and Deleuze and Guittari and a bunch of other names had been studying Lacan's cybernetic Freud, wherein the self/ego didn't have primacy. The self was "decentered", and the person was in-fact living in the Symbolic realm of structures in computer RAM, as a Turing Machine read-head hopping from symbol to symbol, having come from their infantile Imaginary in a doomed attempt to reach the Real.
Back to the second book: When so-called "French Theory" was translated back into English and imported into the United States, the mathematical basis for the theories were lost in translation. The word game, as in formal Game Theory (prisoner's dilemma, et. al) became conflated with play, as in a part or role, because the word jeux is used for both in French. And the term stochastic, as in the randomness of the Markoff chains used to analyze language by Shannon, became translated into aleatory, which has no formal mathematical meaning. The Americans who took up "post structural theory" had no clue that they were working in the same domain as the STEM department across the hall.
Like.... LACAN, DERRIDA, DELEUZE, GUITTARI, FOUCAULT are CYBERNETICISTS. Post modernism is literally about the subjective experience of living inside the contents of a medium. Like, I've been trying to say as much for several years, but it's actually fucking true.
So now, rather than continue with our books, let's make make some conjectures:
American psychoanlysis was ego-heavy, therapeutic, and institutionalized as a branch of psychological medicine. The French took up psychoanalysis as a larger, more universal cultural theory wherein the subconscious as a structured semiotic system had primacy over the now "de-centered" subject, like a CPU jumping around in RAM. And then that theory was imported back into America to flood into all the places psychoanalysis couldn't go, since it's not illegal to practice Post-Modernism without being licensed by the APA.
So where does Alone's narcissism come from? It's the return of the ego within the decentered structures of symbolic structures and media content as subconscious. The self grounded within, and existing within, external media—which was actually the whole theory the whole time, from its genesis, lost in translation. Americans need an ego—so they brought the ego back as narcissism once they imported the ego-less French theory.
Hmmm... why does nobody feel like they belong in their bodies any more? 🤷‍♀️

2020.12.01 23:07 Aumanidol [D] Is scaling the input and output values in deep learning always a good idea?

I faced a quite peculiar problem these days about the convergence of a regressor.
I had to predict a value that could range between -1000 and 1000 up to the second decimal place.
I noticed that the network that used data scaled between the usual -1,1 interval was performing significantly worse than one built with the original data. I always heard that scaling is good since it normalises gradients, avoids vanishing gradients and the likes....
but thinking about it, the error between the predicted value 998 and the true value 1000 if squared goes from 4, in the original data space, to 4e-6 and the gradient goes from 2*2 to 2* 0,002. everything is amplified for errors around 10^-2 in the original coordinates: after scaling they become basically zero. In other words, the scaling destroyed the convergence speed of my NN in high precision tasks.
I think that maybe I'm missing something, but it does make sense: squishing the error into a small set reduces its weight. This behaviour seems common to all optimisers, as comes from the very definition of gradient, but if normalisation and scaling got so popular it must mean that this problem appears only on very specific tasks or that I'm wrong.
Did you experience anything like this? Am I simply looking for a justification to some error in my code?

The smart doorbell lets a homeowner use a smartphone app to interact with the visitor using the doorbell’s high-definition infrared camera and microphone. Some smart doorbells also allow the user to remotely unlock their door. These conveniences have lead to growing popularity for these devices. However, buyer beware; many of these devices have gaping virtual holes in your front door.

Manufacturers try to be the first to market with hot new technologies. Doing so, often means cutting corners on testing, vetting, and security protections. Consequently, this new technology often contains IoT device risks. A video doorbell, at about $70 from a brand called Ctronics had a critical vulnerability that could allow cybercriminals to steal the network password, and use that to hack not only the doorbells and the router but also any other IoT smart devices in the home (think thermostat, camera, or even a laptop). The Victure doorbell tested above also had these same vulnerabilities.
This Ctronics brand also has identical-looking unbranded models to cater to those who may want to spend a little less on their smart doorbell.

This study found this unbranded model on eBay and while it looks similar to a Ring doorbell, it isn’t one. A flaw in this doorbell can easily revert it to a ‘pairing’ stage. This takes it offline and could enable a criminal to seize control of it to steal the doorbell, or just stop it from recording while they burglarize the home. When the seller of this product was contacted about these flaws., they simply removed the listing from eBay. However, these unbranded Ring knock-offs are still available at places like Walmart, for only $38 verses a Ring Smart Doorbell which costs between $99 and $199 dollars! However, as noted in this security article, Ring doorbells haven’t faired much better on the security side. Buyers of these technologies must be aware of these risks, and CyberHoot’s advice is to update them regularly and buy mainstream (aka: Ring) as they are more likely to be fully supported, regularly patched, and more heavily tested.

Hi all, I have an assignment for my computer science class that I just have no idea on how to start. The prompt is as follows:
Write a program that repeatedly quizzes the user about baby name popularity. The files boynames2015.txt and girlnames2015.txt list the 1000 most popular baby boy and girl names from 2015. Your program should randomly select a boy and girl name and ask the user which one was more popular.
To implement this, read in the data in the files using relative pathnames (this will make grading easier).
You want to be sure to group the rank, name, and number of births together for each name. The best way to do this is to define a class, but since this introductory course does not place an emphasis on classes, you may solve this problem using a list of tuples. This means you will need to create 2 lists (one for boys, one for girls) each of length 1000, and each tuple in it will be of length 3. Then, you can randomly select indices from each list and compare the number of boy and girl births stored at each index.
Lastly, print a final message that shows the percentage of questions answered correctly
The two lists are given, with names, rank, and number of births already:
